We packed a compass and a cut lunch this week for our trip out to Gisborne Golf Club who hosted our round 2 match against Melbourne Airport. It was a windy and overcast day perfect for swing bowling, and the ball was hooping around everywhere.

We had three changes to the side this week with Peter L, Jasleen and Dean coming out of the side. The ins were exciting with Matt back in at 2, Pete Naismith making his long-awaited return to the side at 4 and Callum Jacobsen making his debut for the club at 6.

Alex had a tough battle on his hands against an opponent that played inside the top 3 last season. He battled early on and managed to get a few holes back late in the game but it was not his day eventually going down with 4 holes to play.

Callum was off next and was his regular relaxed self and, with Dean on his bag, it was the perfect combination. Walked up to his ball and striped one down the fairway and didn’t look flustered all day. It was a tough start on the front nine getting to 4 down at one stage, but with a cool head on his shoulders and some wise words from his caddy, Cal showed he’s got what it takes fighting back to win on the 17th hole. Great effort from Cal in his first outing and we look forward to plenty more of that.

Darren and “The Mullin” just went about their business knocking off early again with a 5&4 win. Fairways, greens and in the hole is how they like to roll. Big effort from Daz getting out there and back from Sandhurst without his copilot Sammy, so good thing it was an easy day at the office for the veterans.

Peter Naismith made his return and loved being back in the fight. Going about his business in his own unique way Pete slammed drives and putted from everywhere and anywhere like only he can do. Unfortunately, even with the guidance and wisdom from his caddy “The Prez” they were outdone on the 16th hole.

Aaron and his caddy Clark Kent were locked in a tight battle at 3. Going down, square and up with the opponent for most of the day. With his power and finesse Azz managed to get the lead and the momentum at the right time and finished him off on the 17th hole.

Captain Matty was off next and was in the fight for most of his match although his radar was a little off. Both he and his opponent found themselves in tough spots on the fairways and around the green all day. Eventually Matt’s opponent got a lead at the right time and we couldn’t make it back up going down 3&4.

Brock up against fellow experienced pro, Carl Smedley, and had to put in a blue collar performance. Getting himself in and out of strife at stages through his match he was still in it on the 15th when he caught a bunker with no sand in it and flew the ball over the green (sound familiar?) Brock managed to half the 16th par 3, but had a tough 2nd shot on 17 and caught a tree in between him and the green from a tight lie on the wrong fairway. Turns out Brock is human and he went down 2&1.

This week provided another tough assignment against last year’s Div 6 winners Melbourne Airport. They didn’t drop a game last season and they prevailed in a tight battle. We have the week off then it’s out to Yering Meadows on the 17th of March to bounce back against Gisborne at 12:10 off the first. Would be great to see you out there supporting the team!

GO BATS! 🦇
