Great day of golf at what I consider a really challenging but mostly enjoyable course. Good result with 4 wins- Nicholas, Chris, Mark and Bruce, well done. Unfortunately one of our teams had a little difficulty with numbers and decided to play 1st hole after coming off the 9th! Just a little error but all was not lost when this team decided to race at Daniel Ricardo speed in the cart to the 11th to avoid delay to others OMG….. anyway played the remainder of the match correctly only to be held up excessively by a group of 2 players who had no concept of time at all. This prevented our team from officially completing as were timed out after all that effort.

Anyway it was a good day at a great course.

The day started with light drizzly rain falling which made for challenging playing conditions. Include the tight fairways and slick greens at Box Hill GC and we knew we were up for a tough round.

And boy did it pan out that way. Playing against one of the home sides and giving away lots of shots certainly added to the challenge but the Blues beavered away as best they could managing to square three games but still going down to the Brumbies 5.5 to 1.5.

Starting with Para who, playing his 1st game this season, he just couldn’t claw back the 3 shots advantage his opponent had.
Gil just had a day to forget whilst Rod, Lance and yours truly battled hard to eventually square the ledger.
Gav broke his winning streak going down fighting after having to concede 8 shots.
Then we have Tommy “The Lizard” Finch who came back from nowhere to just get pipped at the post. His opponent Dave reckons Tommy was suffering badly from the cool inclement weather but roared back into life once the sun came out and warmed his body. ( Hence the nickname “The Lizard”)

In summary it was a great day regardless of the result with great spirit and sportsmanship displayed by all players. The course itself was beautifully presented and a pleasure to play on. Well done Box Hill GC.

On another note I just want to congratulate the Yarrambat Blacks for making it through to the final against Heidelberg Blue next week. A truly magnificent effort!

With any luck they will bring the Senior Pennant Home and we can also win the Plate! Can’t wait till next Monday!

Go Bats!
Regards,

Mike Di Vincenzo

YARRAMBLAQ STABLES REPORT.

The BLAQ Stables big day in pursuit of a prized finals berth commenced on a drizzly damp BOX HILL track initially rated “dead” but quickly improving to a “good 4”. The day was always going to be the supreme test of great will, stamina and ability, not to mention the home track advantage and the staggering 53 shot tally that we had to concede, our entire stable losing shots to the opposition. But the BLAQ’S  are a hard and race fit group, super confident and buoyed by that juicy spot in next week’s final at Gardiners Run!

The BLAQ’S in order of appearance……

THE MOTSWANIAN PRINCE… (Conceding 6)… Looking to go 4 straight THE PRINCE was tardy from the gates and coming onto the course proper found himself 3 down, he steadied and coming to the turn began his charge, but in what was to be a controversial finish saw him (and a couple of our other runners) penalized through no fault of his own, time constraints, even for the Semi’s resulting in the race being stopped!!! We were standing on the 18th ready to go! No protest to the Stewards as all races were run well below any standard time!          A 1 DOWN AFTER 17 FIZZER!

YOU’RE A WIMP WILSON… (Conceding 3)… In the same heat as THE PRINCE, was to suffer a similar fate, jumping slowly and coming to terms with the tight turning track that saw the lead chop and change in the first half before dropping off, a couple down on the corner, starting his run in the straight gaining plenty of momentum, but alas the smart competitors were slowing down late (a clever tactic?) the bemused WIMP was left lamenting standing on the 18th, 1 down after 17! Licking his lips staring down that long wide par 5!          A 1 DOWN AFTER 17 DOUBLE FIZZER!

HIT ME WITH YOUR WITHAM STICK… (Conceding 4)… The grumpy stallion was on his best behaviour today and controlled the race from the get go and in a rather pedestrian affair was able to salute the judge 1 up after 17, being the first of two of our runners to  take advantage from the “TIME GENTLEMEN PLEASE” ruling!          A 1 UP AFTER 17 WIN!

EFFENQUE… (Conceding 6)… Knuckling badly at the start and almost dislodging the jockey was 6 down after 9 and could have easily been pulled up, we know THE EFF has a distinct dislike of the Box Hill circuit but stable management had faith, and on entering the straight unleashed an almighty burst to win 6 of the next 8, getting to within a head of his opponent only to go down by 1, again after 17!!! The third of our runners to be harshly treated! I can assure you that the stallion was last seen being escorted from the track kicking and screaming at this injustice, all the while maintaining the dignified high moral ground!

A 1 DOWN AFTER 17 TRIPLE FIZZER!

SMUDGE O’CONNELL… (Conceding 11)… Another crappy hand dealt at the weights saw THE SMUDGE start slowly, a couple down early and battling to settle on the tight track and at times even “stargazing”. Realising what was at stake he got into stride and produced a withering run down the outside rail to salute a very easy winner, still holding good form under all that weight!          A 3 AND 2 VICTORY!

THE HUSHED NINJA… (Conceding 11)… The little NINJA carrying a huge weight and showing little sign of a niggling injury from the previous week, (that large bucket of range balls may have taken their toll). Controlling his race from the jump, never in doubt at any stage, as a matter of fact several racegoers were heard commenting “we have just witnessed some irrepressible golf being played”. A slice and dice victory executed in true Samurai tradition!          A 4 AND 3 STUNNER!

ROCKABILLY REBEL… (Conceding 12)… What is there to say about THE REBEL, are there enough superlatives? One of the stables stars that remains undefeated and carrying a colossal impost, the most of all our starters today, was again revelling in that inimitable Wardy master class of his and after 4 runs conceding an incredible 40 shots, this is a weight carrying record and playing BERNIE from Box Hill, who as it turns out was the only filly in the race, shot into the lead and was never headed and with time called saluted  on the post after 17, another great showing from THE REBEL!          A 1 UP AFTER 17 WIN!

A magnificent effort from the BLAQ stable of stars winning 4 and 3 to secure a spot in next week’s final to be held at Gardiners Run where will be up against the formidable Heidelberg Blues last year’s Premiership team. Most of our runners have not raced or even seen the RUN’S course but it does look interesting and not quite as tight as Box Hill! The BLAQ’S are ready and hungry for that Trophy, it should prove to be an enthralling contest! Good luck to BAT BLUE and BAT RED teams playing for the plate, all the best!

As Always go BATS ……. Cheers Wilso.
