President’s Cup Final

The semi finals of the President’s Cup last week saw Nick Broomfield get up against Rod Mountney.  Rod was well down at the turn but charged home on the back 9 to square the match after 17. Nick laid up on the 18th and Rod saw the chance to seize the advantage, going for the win on 18 with driver off the tee. Unfortunately he pulled it left, and after Nick had played his second to the front edge of the green Rod was unable to find his ball and conceded the match. Not the best way for the match to end, but golf is a risk/reward/scr*w you game and with the highs, come the lows.

In the other semi-final Troy Marshall had fired his best shots in the earlier rounds and while he pushed Dave Mithen to the 16th, Dave was very solid, not giving an inch and Troy never recaptured his mojo, falling 4&2.

This set up an enthralling battle today, the two protagonists Nick & Dave, mates for many years, had been chippy all week, and their banter game was good. Would the golf live up to expectations?

Nick took the 1st after a wayward approach from Dave, but then Dave squared the match on 2 after Nick found the trees. Nerves out the way, they squared the next 6 holes to be even at 9. This was one of the two holes Dave had a shot on (despite at one point offering to play the match “off the stick”) and he took full advantage, winning the hole in par.

But like the start to the match, Nick squared the match on 10 after some average short game play from Dave. Nick took the 11th to go 1 up, and they halved the 12th. Dave took the 13th again taking advantage of the second hole he had a shot on.

Nick blew a golden opportunity on the 14th to go one up, and rued the chance after Dave birdied 15 for a 1 hole lead. Dave stuck it in close on 16 to pile on some pressure, but Nick was equal to the challenge finding the middle of the green and halving the hole in 3.

With Dave one up on 17, Nick again had a chance to square it up with Mitho in the trees right. He left his putt/chip short and the hole was halved. Going down the last, with Daze in the left pot for two, Nick had one last chance to square the match and head to extra holes, but it was not to be – the last was halved and Dave prevailed one up.

Both players should be applauded for reaching the pinnacle and for a good battle, but (like the Pies will do this season), Nick fell just short.

Congratulations Cocko!
