VGA PENNANT Round 1 report

Yarrambat Golf Club took on last year’s Division 6 runner up Yering Meadows at Mt Derrimut Golf Club on a hot day where the ball was flying 20-30 yards further than it should.

Dean Mottram, with well over 150 pennant games experience, got the show started with a beautiful shot down the 10th and finished the hole one up. Dean was up for most of his match but unfortunately, he was playing against one of the most irritating pr*cks in the competition and that may have worn him down in the end.

Alex was off next with a beautiful tee shot down the first. Our Macedonian marvel was up against it for most of his match but with the calming voice of looper Mark Wilson he dug deep and fought back like he does so well. Got to 3 down at one point but fought back to get the job done on the 18th hole!

Darren and The Mullin weren’t interested in working to hard today and got the job done 7&6. Knocked off early, got changed and just took it easy in a cart. The old boys probably needed a nice easy start to the year anyway. They love getting a job done and have been doing it for years.

The Bombay Bomber was off next and was up to his usual business pulling out his magic tricks nice and early in the season. Got himself out of trouble all day with fancy fades and a 50-foot putt on the 19th. They went to the 20th hole and his opponent from Yering just came out on top. Huge effort from Jas and his caddie Glenn Noonan today but sadly no biscuits.

Our young gun Azza was off next and was in locked in a tight battle with another young gun from Yering, both were hitting bombs all day and finishing off their work. With all his power Azza flew a 9 iron too long on the 18th and went OB and conceded the hole and the match. No doubt he and caddy King Chris will be back with a vengeance.

Peter Lamaris, by way of Louisiana college ball, Eastern and Bundoora made his debut for the club and managed to stay in control for all of his match with a 5&4 win. Solid effort from Peter today and never looked in trouble. A welcome addition to bolster the professional ranks against some of the larger clubs when our lads are off on tour.

Brock was our no 1 and got the job done like the pro he his. Had to work hard for it, going from 2 up to square and then doing what’s needed to finish 2 up with one to play. With our captain Matt on his bag, they have the tools to get the job done from anywhere and they did.

Great start to the season team – onwards and upwards next week.

We take on last year’s undefeated Div 6 Premiers Melbourne Airport at Gisborne this Sunday – we’d love to see you all there!
