Reflections on a 1 in 12,500 shot – twice in a lifetime.

Presentation day, and a different format. Split sixes? How will that work?

Starting on the 9th hole – in the middle of the “aggregate holes” I remembered thinking it was lucky these holes weren’t the multipliers, because my start was a little scratchy. A double bogey, bogey, double bogey, start and I felt I was not helping Alan too much with my one pointers! Alan had 7 points over the first 3 holes, and I had added 4, I really needed a pick me up to find my groove.

Standing on the 12th hole, with a stiff breeze into the face – there was no rush to tee off as there was a little hold up ahead. I recall smoking a 6-iron last time up on this hole and going long, but with the breeze into, I thought a 5 would be the right club today.

I’ve been a little obsessed with finding the “low point” of my swing of late – those free YouTube lessons were a real find!

The delay ahead had caused a bank up and the group behind Nick Marco, Mark Bazzoni, Sean and Dan had caught up. Who doesn’t like a gallery on the 12th as you just pray that you get past the trees and over the water!

Hitting a yellow #1 Titleist Tru-Feel  “gifted” to me by Michael Hou (thanks Michael!) I stood over the ball and focused my thoughts on that “low-point”. I hardly felt the ball off the club face, an absolutely pure strike – right on line at the flag, nicely flighted, landing on the front third of the green, a bounce or two on line and then it disappeared over the horizon and of sight.

Calls of “it’s in the hole”, “mine’s a scotch” and “your shout” erupted before we had even left the tee – a little prematurely I thought.

Mick Di Vincenzo & Mike Wright had driven up greenside (but still 10 metres away!) and after a quick search Mick found the little yella fella in the cup!! Whilst he was jumping out of his skin, Alan Searle offered his congratulations (and thanks that I had finally scored some points – a 1 for 5) as we walked to the green. I was still a little sceptical and disbelieving until I saw the ball at the bottom of the hole.

Wow, I feel very privileged and love this little patch at Yarrambat! Thank you to all for your congratulations.

Thanks again to Michael for the gift of the magical yellow ball – and funnily enough Michael was in my group when I holed out on the 16th 4 years ago!

Yours gratefully,

David Morley

Congratulations David! A second hole in one, and the first one the 12th in 8 years!

(and yes, he did fix the pitch mark!)
