2023

Members,

As another year comes to a close, and the cost of living continues to rise and cause hardship across the country, yet another Covid outbreak threatens, and the rains of the last weeks have led to devastating floods in far north Queensland; we are reminded how lucky we are to be able to play the game we love, and how trivial our worries about our slice, short game or bunker play can be at times.

Some of us have improved, some ‘have hit the ceiling’ and some have gone backwards – no matter what they try. Those (few) days when it all comes together are the reason we play, as well as the friendship and camaraderie that is found within our club. So many new members remark that there is a great atmosphere at Yarrambat, a ”soul” that many clubs do not possess.

No matter how or when you play the game – be it Thursday Seniors, Sunday warriors, Wednesday or Saturday regulars or just the summer Chook Run – whether it’s concession, 5 or 7 day, or casual green fees – we are all proud members of one club – the Yarrambat Golf Club.

This year saw the introduction of cashless competition entry, and the rebranding of the Club with an instantly recognisable new Club logo, and from all reports, it has been very successful and genuinely raised our image. Our “brand recognition” as the marketing gurus would say, has spiked remarkably.

We had a successful foray into Division 5 VGA Pennant, missing the finals by just one game, and hope to go one step further next year, and our Senior Pennant teams will be flush with talent (old and new) for 2024 as we seek to reclaim the flag.

The 2024 Syllabus will be released shortly, with the provision for the IVO WHITTON 36-hole amateur tournament early next year, and some new events including Par Plus, Pick Your Tee, and other changes, again some great work by Peter Lowrey and the Match Committee to squeeze in a very full calendar.

The two-person bookings for Monthly and Mid-week medal rounds will continue in the cooler, post daylight savings period next year. This will enable members all members equal opportunity at those prime times, as well as allowing new and old members to get to know others on that one day a month, and enhance the Club atmosphere on these event days.

The end of year Presentation Day was a great success (see photo gallery), it was great to see so many members attending – hopefully we can get an even bigger event next year – and the trial of the new format Split Sixes kept everyone in the hunt until the last holes and, from all reports, everyone had a good time afterwards.

The course has never looked better, and we will continue to work with Matt, Brock and Fraser to achieve the best conditions for our members and the course. (and now everyone has a new sand scoop, there is no excuse to walk past a divot – even if it is from those pesky public players!)

I thank you all for your efforts across the year as we moved (fairly smoothly) to Tap’N’Play and picked up the pace of play by an average 20 minutes a round – well done to all.

On behalf of the YGC Committee, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and successful, safe and Happy New Year.

Stuart Thompson

President YGC
