A miracle on the 8th!

On a warm Monday morning, our intrepid Treasurer Mark Huybers, freshly back from his sojourn to the Murray courses, was having an average round, playing ‘solid’ bogey golf while doing his best not to set the world on fire.

He was playing without the usual safety net of his familiar group and feeling the pressure of playing with club stalwarts Paul Reid and Eric Meachem, was alternating bogeys with pars and wipes to stay just on his handicap.

He stepped to the 8th tee, a freshening breeze in the face, with a tight left pin bringing the water into play. Unperturbed Mark pulled his trusty 6 iron and took aim, planning on taking on the flag.

Well, the hands took over and he bladed his 6 iron – a full 4 grooves low – and the ball headed to a watery grave! But, being a numbers man, and having recently watched Apollo 13, Mark thought he had calculated the angle of re-entry perfectly, and watched the ball skim across the water – one skip, two skips, maybe a even a 3rd, before it disappeared into the reeds on the far side near the No Play Zone.

Mark sheepishly wandered up to take a penalty drop before the water, when the group’s attention was drawn by a commotion from the 9th tee. At first the group thought that a wayward ball was coming from the second tee, but as they drew closer, they could vaguely discern the excited utterances “It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!”

Still thinking the group ahead were taking the p155, Mark walked up, and sure enough – there it was, comfortably ensconced at the bottom of the hole. A hole-in-one!

Paul is becoming quite familiar with such “classic” holes-in-one on the 8th, so he was not affected in the least. Mark however fell apart and played the rest of the round in an absent haze.

Well done Mark, a 1-in-12000 round, bucket list feat achieved!
