2023 Winter Challenge

The 2023 YGC Winter Challenge was played across 3 rounds, and three different courses. One round during each winter month. The competition started on the Blue course in late June in damp conditions,  the Gold course hosted round 2 in July with preferred lies, no run and a bit of mud, then the competition finished in sunshine and a stiff breeze in August on the Red course.

After 2 rounds only 3 shots separated the top 6 players and it was really up for grabs! The final round was a tester, and anyone who thought playing off the reds would be ‘easy’ was in for a rude awakening.

A few of the early leaders fell by the wayside, and a couple of others charged from well back but stumbled coming home. In the end, the top 4 were the only players to have 3 rounds of 30 points or more and only 4 points split them. Consistency was rewarded, and a few will probably look back over the 54 holes and rue the missed opportunities – a missed putt or a duff chip.

Congratulations to Mark “The ‘Capper” Wilson, the winner by 2 (or a half head) from Richard Canty with John Cobbett and Jack Leonello a further 2 back.
