VGA Pennant R6

On an atrocious Sunday morning the team ventured east to Berwick-Montuna GC, a tight, hilly track set in the foothills at the Dandenong Ranges at Beaconsfield. The rain had been relentless since Saturday night, and showed no signs of easing as the early groups started and stopped 3 times as greens were under water and play threatened to be halted.

It was cold, wet and windy as the team shivered by the 10th tee, play delayed by an hour, when suddenly Brock had a family emergency and had to head home. With no emergency available (work & family commitments over the Orthodox Easter weekend had severely depleted the available players) eyes turned to the caddies and spectators to fil in this crucial spot – but none had their gear!

In what can only be described as a foolhardy, yet heroic stand, Thabo – yes Thabo – stepped forward and offered to play at Number 1 (using Brock’s clubs – which would easily be 4″ too short!)

Play finally got underway, against our old foes Mt Derrimut and Alex jumped out to an early and almost unassailable lead, with the promise of a true ”wog Easter” feast awaiting him, before finally closing the deal 1 up.

Aaron, who’s girlfriend Caitlin made a huge sacrifice to let him skip her birthday festivities for the sake of the team,  set off at #6 and fought bravely against some unusually wayward irons.

Darren was in at #5 and played solid golf is a finely balanced match, before triumphing on the 18th.

Daniel, who is well known to dislike the cold and wet, was at his clinical best, maintaining his outstanding form to demolish his opponent 7 & 5 and headed off find his umbrella and a warming scotch.

Skipper Matty A maintained his recent touch and held sway over a tenacious opponent, gaining the upper hand on the last to win 1 up.

“Imran the unstoppable” had the better of the conditions, as the rain and wind slipped past his slim but deceptively powerful frame, and he was clinical in taking a 1 up win on the 18th.

And that left Thabo, battling manfully with short sticks, an unfamiliar putter, little preparation and shocking conditions (while also trying not to sky-mark the driver) as he took on Mt Derrimut’s #1 Connor McClean. There was to be no fairytale ending though and though he fell 4&3 his efforts are to be applauded.

An outstanding 5&2 win in truly shocking conditions. Huge effort lads, huge!

And to the caddies and spectators that braved the weather to support the team – a massive thank you.

You all did the Club proud.

This leaves the ladder precariously balanced, and after The Heritage lost 2&5 to the home side Berwick-Montuna, this creates two crucial matches in the final round of the home and away season

We sit 3rd on the ladder, 1 point and 2 games behind second placed The Heritage GC.

The Heritage GC take on ladder leaders Box Hill, and they have pulled a quick switch to throw off their opponents – changing the course of the day to The Henley – when all players had prepared for St John’s.

A shifty, but understandable move.

We take on Waverley-Churchill in a must win match, and a 5-2 will be the minimum result needed, and then we rely on Box Hill taking the chocolates against Heritage.

If the results fall our way, and we do the job we need to do, then there is a place in the final awaiting.

Member support for the team will be team will be crucial to get the lads over the line in this club defining match. The possibility of jumping straight to Division 4 is real, and huge for our ”little” Club, going up against these behemoth, wealthy and prestigious clubs with membership in the thousands, Yarrambat GC cannot be underestimated.

So let’s all show up at The Heritage this Sunday (12:10 tee off) and show our support!

Go ‘Bats! 🦇🦇🦇🦇
