2020 YGC Foursomes Champions

This year saw the Foursomes Championship re-scheduled from the balmy April sunshine to the early chill of winter as a result of the COViD-19 enforced shut-down.

Last year’s Championship pairing (both Gross and Nett!) Witho and The Zoz did not suit up time round, as Witho had ‘lost his mojo’ and didn’t want to drag The Zoz down. Not to be left out, Ryan found a willing partner in new member (but old stager), Mick Wilson.

There were a number of pairs that looked to challenge for the Championship this time round; Calvin Plowright (3) and Peter Naismith (3) loomed as huge contenders, The Zoz (13) and Mick Wilson (13) with Ryan looking to back up, Darren Kershaw (3) and Jasleen Kooner (5) are always dangerous with Dazz’s consistency and Jas’s flash and mercurial talent.

Father and son combo Sam (10) and Aaron Saykan (6) looked to capitalise on Azza’s driving and Sam’s puttiing, while Dale “Midweek Champion” Sudborough (6) and “The Prez” Stuart Thompson (11) were happy to slide under the radar as the ‘dark horses’. Princely Emmanuel paired up with good mate Dim Trpcevski, but Dim had not yet qualified for YGC Board events.

Round one saw a tight contest for the Board Event, with Daz and Jas posting a solid 81 to hold a two stroke lead over the Saykan’s (83) who were one stroke ahead of Dale and The Prez (84). The anticipated challenge from Calvin and Pete Naismith failed to eventuate after Peter set his alarm for 6:30…PM! and missed his start..🙄😂

The Nett competition was thrown wide open as Jim ‘Did anyone see my ball’ Vass and Sean ‘Your ball got sucked into the Chemtrails’ Connell came in with a jaw dropping 71, to lead Minh Hou and Alan Rowles by 1/2 a stroke, with The Saykans well back on 75, ahead of Dale & The Prez and Brian Hou and Carlo Bigaran both on 75.5 with Rob O’Connell and Rod Heideman on 76 and Martin Pearce and Club VC Joe Caruana on 76.5.

A gaggle of pairing were in striking distance on 77, including ‘Pad Thai’ Troy Pickford & ‘Weather presenter’ Nick Coe; Michael ‘I’m a foundation member’ Baertschiger & John ‘He’s not a foundation member’ Frawley; Ryan ‘The Zoz’ Zosel & (the other Scotsman) Mick Wilson.

Week 2 saw Daz and Jas post the early score with a solid 80 off the stick to lay down the challenge to the Saykan’s, Dale and The Prez. Aaron & Sam couldn’t get their round going and shot an 87 to fall back, while Dale and The Prez started well, with the Prez holing out from the bunker on 2 for a birdie, but double bogies on 3, 16 & 17 cruelled their chances.

As often happens the Nett Competition can seen wild fluctuations as some teams fail to back up, while others step up to play great rounds. Bruce Tudhope and Bruce Thomas played out of their skins for a great 74.4, Dale and The Prez backed up the previous week with a nett 75, Jason Mullin and Ash Crawford improved by 10 strokes, Aaron & Sam were thereabouts, Ron Dingle and Jack Leonello played a great round, while Sean & Jim, and Minh and Alan both dropped 10 strokes to fall out of contention.

Ryan Zosel gave his (nett) title defence a great shake with new partner Mick Wilson, falling by 2 1/2 strokes to the Nett Foursomes Champions Dale Sudborough and Stuart Thompson (150.5), with Sam and Aaron Saykan, Darren & Jas and Sean and Jim all finishing on 153 as well.

Congratulations to Darren Kershaw and Jasleen Kooner – 2020 YGC Foursomes Champions 🏆

Congratulations to Dale Sudborough and Stuart Thompson – 2020 YGC (Nett) Foursomes Champions 🏆
