A tribute.

Dear members,

As you know our Club has more than it’s fair share of serving and former police officers amongst its members.

The events of last Wednesday evening shook our community to its core and will have a deep and profound effect of all of us, but especially those who work in the emergency services.

A lot of you will know that Justin Asquith, Nick Marco and I worked for many years at the Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section (“The Booze Buses”) and on Wednesday night, in tragic circumstances we lost a long term colleague and friend, LSC Lyn Taylor who has been there for the last 9 years, as well her partner that night, newly graduated Constable Glen Humphris along with 2 other police officers from Nunawading Hwy Patrol  S/Con Kev King and Const, Josh Prestney.

There are others amongst us that would know or have worked with Lyn, Kev, Josh and Glen, as well as others who attended the scene, the civilians that stopped to try and help amongst the carnage, ambulance officers, fire rescue workers, VicRoads and perhaps their families or other police members that would be affected by this tragedy and share the loss.

To put a human face to this, Justin reminded me this week that Lyn was a hard working, resilient, caring and resourceful woman who stood up for others and put her family first above everything. For her to still be working shift work, after 30 years of policing, mainly late nights, out on the road, wearing 15kgs of operational police gear at 60 years of age, doing her best to remove drug or alcohol impaired drivers from our roads to keep the rest of us and our families safe – is a testament to her fortitude and dedication.

Kevin shared Lyn’s passion for road safety and Josh and Glen were still to find their path in policing, but all four, in the words of Lincoln, “gave their last full measure of devotion”, to keep our community safe.

There are no words to adequately explain the senselessness of this loss and nothing that comes after can change the events. That it occurred on the cusp of ANZAC Day reminding us of the many other service men and women who sacrificed everything so we could continue to live in the wonderful country that is Australia, and just days before the anniversary of the on-duty deaths of SC Tony Clarke and SC Rennie Page in 2005 drives home the fragility of life.

Thank you Lyn, Kevin, Josh, Glen, Tony and Rennie.  You are missed

Take care of each other, and please take care on our roads.

Stuart
