President’s Cup final

On a chilly Saturday morning, with the wind picking up, Dale “Steptoe” Sudborough and Paul “Bear” Biancotto set out to decide the Final of the 2020 President’s Cup.

The pair took different paths to the final, with Dale giving up many strokes to opponents in every round, while Paul had a slightly easier path, with two opponents mysteriously suffering injuries before their matches (no suggestions here of Calabrian influence, but he is Italian!)

After both players said had solid wins in the semi’s and both tuned up their game at Tocumwal last weekend (with much smack being thrown down) I was sure we were in for a tight battle.

Both players hit solid drives, long down the middle on the first, with Paul’s 2nd missing the green right and Dale’s finding the heart of the green 20′ below the pin.

Paul chipped on to 10′, and Dale putted to gimme range. Paul missed and Dale didn’t. Dale 1 up. Both players were solid on the second, but Dale went long over the green, allowing Paul to square the match. The third hole was to set the tone for the remainder of the match. Paul had a short putt to square the hole, but missed – a tale that was to be repeated over the next few holes. Dale continued to play solid golf, not letting Paul in, and The Bear became The Teddy, unable to replicate the form of last week, going down 6&5 after missing a putt and squaring the 12th.

Congratulations Dale, a well deserved victory.
