Clarification of scoring and eligibility for Yarrambat Golf Club team events (two ball / four ball)

Members,

There has been much speculation this past week regarding the eligibility of players playing a team event, particularly when there may be no other team to ‘mark their card’, or if the other team withdraws mid-round though illness, injury or for any other reason.

This post will address these issues.

The game of golf is a self-regulated game, where players are bound to call penalties upon themselves, that other players may not have seen; where trust, integrity and honesty are paramount.

Rule 1 introduces these central principles of the game for the player:
  • Play the course as you find it and play the ball as it lies.
  • Play by the Rules and in the spirit of the game.
  • You are responsible for applying your own penalties if you breach a Rule, so that you cannot gain any potential advantage over your opponent in match play or other players in stroke play.
At Yarrambat Golf Club we endeavour to ensure that every player can play in any event, that they are not denied the opportunity to participate on any given day and should not be penalised because someone in their booking time pulled out and left them stranded, or because someone in their group pulled out mid-round.

There is a long history of team events being scored solely by the team that is playing, for a number of years the Yarrambat Golf Club presentation day was played as a four person ambrose – where the four players of one team scored their own game.  More broadly the Holden (now Volkswagen) Scramble for the past 18 years has stated that In the case of an event which does not have a marker allocated to a team, the scorecard must be signed by at least two members of the team.”

To be clear – if, in a YGC Team Event, a team does not have a marker assigned or available, provided all players names are recorded on the card and at least two players have signed the card at the completion of the round, the score is valid.

The Match Committee hopes that the recent President’s Cup Final and Canadian Foursomes event, which has apparently sparked much activity and innuendo, is not causing members to question, without any foundation, the integrity of Greg Stout, one of our Foundation Members or Stuart Thompson, the President of the Yarrambat Golf Club.

For the sake of clarity, Greg and Stuart rightfully played in the final pairing of the President’s Cup between Dale Sudborough and Paul Biancotto to provide independent review of any rulings or score disputes. The Final match finished, some would suggest unexpectedly early on the 12th hole, leaving Greg and Stuart to complete their round alone. Both players names were recorded on the card, and both players signed the card as being correct. The score was confirmed and the Competition finalised and closed.

The current rumour mongering and whisper campaign is unwarranted and damaging to the reputation of both the Club and players involved and is to cease immediately.
Any member who, without just cause, brings into disrepute, or damages the reputation of any other member will be referred to the Match Committee.
