Club and Grade Championships – Results

Published on 1st December 2019 in Uncategorized

The final  round of the YGC Club and Grade Championships was played in perfect conditions. Despite an ordinary forecast, there was no rain and little wind – with the sun breaking through to shine on our leading groups.

First out were the C Grade, and Peter Lowrey – despite dropping a stroke off his handicap, played  a blinder, finishing with a final round nett 64  to leave the chasers in his wake.  Congratulations Peter!

Commiserations to Dom, Paul and Jacqui who were all in the mix and played some great golf over the 4 weeks.

Next out were the top 8 B Grade contenders, and  Michael Hou, a previous C Grade Champion held off strong finishers Daniel Soon and David Weston; Tony Barba came across from Northern one month too late to be eligible, but is one to watch next year.

Some remarkably consistent golf from the top 10 players over the journey, with round 3 leader John Ward unable to reproduce his recent form to fall to a distant 7th. Michael closed it out with  nett 70, to firmly grasp the trophy! Congratulations Michael!

The A Grade group, with the top 4 Nett and top 4 Gross leaders fought it out, with Jason Mullin finally living up to his promise, and producing 4 consistent rounds, speckled with flashes of brilliance, to take out the A Grade Championship ahead of Junior Champion Aaron Saykan, just ahead of Dale with Princely stumbling in round 3 and Crowey ruing a slow start in round 1. Well done Jason,  congratulations!

The Club Championship was a race in two, with Darren Kershaw starting  the final round 1 shot behind Dale Sudborough, with others too far back to contend for the gross honours.

The final round was a seesawing effort, with Darren and Dale level after 69 holes (the 15th).

An unfortunate break saw Dale in a dodgy lie on 16,  leading to a double bogey, Darren also bogeyed but went one stroke up. Both  players bogeyed 17, and went to the 18th with Dale one down. He found the green side bunker, and after nearly holing his par putt, had to settle for bogey. Darren made the par and held on to win by two strokes. Commiserations Dale, well played.

Congratulations to 4 time Club Champion Darren Kershaw.
