President’s Cup Final

Congratulations to David Morley the 2019 President’s Cup winner.

This match was destined to be a ripper, with Justin Crowe giving away 7 strokes to David, who has been in a rich vein of Match play form of late and playing much better an his 17 handicaps would suggest.

A see sawing final battle between Justin and David saw Crowey start 3 up after 3.

David’s cheer squad (his son) appeared on the 4th tee, and things began to turn. David took the 4th, and was generously (in the author’s view) awarded the 5th to go 2 up, the match see sawed through the turn; before Crowey fought back to square again after 11. David took the 12th, Crowey the 13th, David the 14th and then Crowey the 15th.. still square on the 16th tee, and a great up and down out of the right bunker saw David salvage a half on the tough par 3.

Both players found trouble off the tee on 17, David left and Crowey right; both scrambled up but David played a clutch 4th to put the pressure on, and walked to 18 1 up.

David had the honour and played a great shot down the right side of the fairway, toward the narrows. Crowey was pressing to win the whole, and with the slightest zephyr behind, took on the water. He caught the leaves of the big gum, and a brief search located his ball. It had carried the water, but rolled back toward the hazard, in the hollow up against the reeds. A closer look showed his ball sitting right on top of another ball.

David had played a cracker 2nd – finishing 10 feet right of the pin, and really turning the screws. Crowey was forced to try a bunt out sideways – (if you own a stray Nike ball don’t own up for a while) – and the match was done.

The caddies too were a great help to the players.

David’s caddy Ian Witham must be acknowledged- his green reading skill and advice was uncanny – he obviously spends far too much time on the course.

While Trev Wiseman was fantastic, nor only did he clean Crowey’s balls on demand, but he didn’t get lost once (although he did get a bit confused after the 5th and had to be steered toward the 6th)

Both players played clutch golf, sinking long putts, driving long and straight – I was thinking that this match could go 36 holes! But David held his nerve, and came through at the end.

Congratulations to both players on a great match – just reaching the final is no easy task!

Well done David – you can be rightly proud of your achievement.
